With the newly revitalized River Market, the up and coming high end theater, and the recreational pier along the river, you will see a lot of changes. Fortunately, it is still an area thriving of independent and unique non-chain businesses, which is very rare in Vancouver. We yearn for thriving, vibrant, interesting—and successful!—shops that offer something unique and personal. To me, that's nourishing for the creative spirit of residents but also the city as a whole.
But the risk is there, as the city's success grows as a destination for people to live and work, and for businesses to locate, that the unique flavour of the city will be lost. Big chains have a place, and a few on our main strips are OK, I think. Turning Columbia into Robson might be great for making it a magnet, but it won't be one for folks like myself. If I want Robson, well, that's where I'll go.Chris Bryan, NewsLeadernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7013907333451098444.post-29550858805640202542011-04-01T17:49:52.065-07:002011-04-01T17:49:52.065-07:00I live in Sapperton and am also following you. (I have a "shop B.C." list on my Twitter account.) I support the regional/Buy BC shopping idea in theory, but right now most people in New West leave the city to do most of their shopping. There are a few, but not many, niche businesses that attract out-of-New-West shoppers to town. (Our booming bridal district being a notable example, as well as unique, niche stores like Karmavore Vegan.)
New West is nowhere close to maximizing the direct benefits you mentioned from taxes flowing back to the city. So, for this year, I'm focused on showing people, both in and outside New West, all our city has to offer.SheilaKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00798102154259727826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7013907333451098444.post-64597333681541959262011-01-25T13:43:52.016-08:002011-01-25T13:43:52.016-08:00Hi Sheila:

LOCO BC is working to promote Buy Local to consumers, businesses and governments/institutions - we call it OWN YOUR OWN.

Just a few points on how the economics work. When you shop at a local businesses and how that supports the community and builds a diverse mix of businesses.

When you shop at a business near where you live that benefits your local community because property tax flows back to your City, and sales tax flows back to the province. When you shop at a locally owned business - a business with local ownership - you get the benefits mentioned above plus your local community benefits from the multiplier effect.

The multiplier effect just means that when you spend money at a locally owned business, they also spend money on local supplies and services, and the money circulates more times, bring more wealth and employment to the community.

This is why it's so important to shop at independent businesses or local chains rather than big multinational chain stores - it has 2-5 times the economic benefit. It keeps the local shopping mix competitive and vital. Shopping at your local Starbucks or Wal-mart or Safeway has much less benefit. I be the Wal-mart in your neighbourhood has something to do with the reason that Pricesmart is struggling. Pricesmart is owned by Overwaitea Food Group, so a much better choice that Wal-mart since they are local to BC. I know that you've confined yourself to New West, but I would suggest there's much more benefit in general to setting goals around shopping at locally owned stores even if they are outside your immediate area. LOCO BC calls it the "buy-region" and limits it to BC.

Hopefully this helps. Watch www.locobc.com for more info.

All the best on your project!Amyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10535826800796363796noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7013907333451098444.post-15308569702216387262011-01-24T08:55:27.189-08:002011-01-24T08:55:27.189-08:00I have found that smaller green grocers often have...I have found that smaller green grocers often have some things much much cheaper than bigger grocery stores. You just have to price watch. Also, if you're shopping at the farmers market, some things cost a little more, but they are sooo much better for you. Anyway, great project!
